Runway Joins the Tech Coalition and Lantern

· by Runway

Runway has joined the Tech Coalition, a global alliance of technology companies working to fight online child sexual exploitation and abuse (OCSEA). We've also joined Lantern, the Tech Coalition's signal-sharing program designed to help companies detect and address OCSEA across services.

People who exploit children rarely stay on one platform. Lantern enables participating companies to securely share signals associated with activity that violates their policies around OCSEA. These signals can help companies connect intelligence across services, identify patterns of abuse and take faster action. Runway will use Lantern signals to strengthen our detection and investigations, and we'll contribute signals from our own OCSEA enforcement.

Joining the Tech Coalition connects our Safety team with industry guidance, research and peers working on the same problems, and allows us to contribute our insights and experience to the broader community. This work is particularly crucial as the generative media space continues to evolve quickly, including moving towards real-time formats.

Our Approach to Child Safety

This membership builds on work we described in Our Approach to Child Safety, which follows Thorn's Safety by Design principles. That work includes:

  • Filtering training data with hash matching, child safety classifiers and LLM-based moderation
  • Red teaming text, image, video and audio before each model ships
  • Checking all user-uploaded content against known child sexual abuse material (CSAM) hash databases, plus a classifier that detects previously unknown CSAM
  • Manually reviewing all flagged content and reporting confirmed CSAM to NCMEC
  • Adding C2PA provenance to content made with our tools

No single company can solve this alone. We'll keep investing in partnerships like these and updating our safeguards as threats change. Read more on our Safety page.
