Introducing Runway Dev
Runway Dev is the AI media platform for developers: one API for the best image, video and character models, enterprise-ready by default.

Runway Dev is the AI media platform for developers: one API to integrate the best image, video, audio and real-time character models.

Today, we're launching Runway Dev, a new AI media platform for professional developers and enterprise teams. It's ready to ship fast, with the best models, custom workflows and the security and reliability controls they require.

Runway Dev is already used by teams at companies including Adobe, ElevenLabs, Shutterstock, Figma Weave, Gamma and Silverside to generate millions of videos, images and other creative content. It's also enterprise-ready, with rigorous security standards, contractual commitments not to train on your data and support for zero-data retention.

From search and advertising to ecommerce and gaming, developers know they need to integrate AI media directly into their product experiences to cut costs, iterate faster and drive better consumer engagement. Runway Dev gives teams building generative media experiences a single platform from one vendor, removing the need to stitch together a dozen disparate APIs on their own.

What's Included in Runway Dev

Runway Dev is built around four capabilities: Models, Runway Media Router, Recipes and Workflows, plus Characters for interactive avatars.

Models: The Best of Runway and the Industry, One Integration Away

Runway Dev gives developers first-party access to Runway's frontier models, including Gen-4.5, Aleph 2.0 and Act-Two, alongside the best third-party models, including Seedance, GPT Image 2 and ElevenLabs.

New models are available on day zero. Swap between them by changing one line of code, and track spend across every model from a single billing dashboard. Runway Dev is the only platform pairing proprietary frontier media models with infrastructure purpose-built to serve production media workloads.

Runway Media Router: The First Model Router for Generative Media Models

Runway Media Router is the world's first model router for generative media models. It automatically selects the best video, image or audio model for every request. Media has never had an equivalent to intelligent routing for language models, largely because video, image and audio models vary so much in what they can actually produce. Media Router solves this by matching a request to a model's capabilities and modalities, then optimizing across the qualifying models for the cost, quality and latency preferences you set.

Model Router replaces manual model selection with three steps:

Set your preferences. In the Runway Dev portal, select an optimization preference between cost, latency and quality. Name your config, set a price cap, allow or deny different models or providers and optimize between your preferences. Save it once as a reusable config tied to a specific workflow, like a fast in-app preview versus a paid final export.

Call one endpoint. Send your generation request to the Model Router endpoint with your config ID attached. No need to specify a model.

Get the best model. The router filters out any model that fails your hard constraints (capability fit, allow and deny lists, price cap), then scores the remaining models against your cost, quality and latency preferences. It generates with the highest-scoring model and returns the result along with metadata identifying exactly which model was used and why.

Recipes: Pre-Built Endpoints for Specific Outcomes

Recipes are Runway-built endpoints that package Runway's prompting and workflow expertise into a single API call, making it easier to generate polished outputs without building, tuning or maintaining the underlying workflow yourself. They're designed to integrate directly into enterprise platforms and production workflows with minimal lift. Some of the most popular Recipes include Ad Localization, Product Ad, Product Swap, Multi-Shot Video and Marketing Stock Image.

With Ad Localization, you can put a single image in and get a version for every market, all with a single request.

Workflows: Your Own Custom Pipelines, Triggered via API

Workflows let you combine multiple models, modalities and tasks into a custom pipeline, then trigger it through a private API endpoint. Build it once and call it from anywhere, as often as you need.

Today, some of the largest enterprises use Workflows via Runway Dev to scale content production in ways built around their own tools and teams:

  • A major broadcaster runs an API-integrated workflow that lets a 5-person team produce 800-1,000 ads a year across 50+ studio labels.
  • A global retailer generates over 1,000 product shots a month through an automated pipeline, replacing shoots that used to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
  • A 500-person in-house agency now runs a single agentic pipeline that turns one brief into text, image and video output across creative campaigns.
  • A food delivery platform runs a batch API pipeline that localizes product video across 27 languages.
  • A performance marketing agency built a script-to-storyboard workflow that's now expanding into a fully API-driven production platform for its clients.

Characters: Interactive Avatars, Only on Runway Dev

Runway Characters bring real-time interactive avatars with voice, tool calling and a knowledge base directly into your product. Upload a photo or generate a character to give your agent a face and personality. Characters support real-time, interactive agent experiences for customer support, training simulations, interactive entertainment and more. This capability is only available on Runway Dev.

How Teams Use Runway Dev

Ecommerce teams run product visuals through Recipes. Generating on-brand product video and localized image variants across thousands of SKUs used to mean a photo shoot or a stack of separate tools. A single Recipe call now produces campaign-ready variants in bulk.

Game studios build with Characters. Adding a real-time interactive avatar to a product used to mean building voice, tool calling and memory from scratch. Characters brings all three directly into your product, with no fine-tuning required.

Agencies chain custom pipelines through Workflows. Campaigns that span multiple models and formats used to mean managing separate vendor integrations for each step. A Workflow combines them into one endpoint, built once and called from anywhere.

Enterprise-Grade by Design

Runway Dev is built for enterprise readiness. All third-party model providers go through Runway's vendor management program, which includes a security review, validation of available security certifications and contractual data protection requirements. We negotiate no-training restrictions and data-retention terms for every model on the platform. Team controls like spend management and per-model cost visibility are built in. Runway Dev also ships with SOC 2 Type II compliance, IP indemnification, built-in content moderation and 99.9% uptime.

Runway Dev is available now. As we build toward a single interface for every enterprise creative need, we're shipping new Recipes on a regular cadence, building in an intelligent routing layer and upgrading agentic capabilities.
